Adopt a Senior Pet-Meet Miss Kitty

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

At animal shelters and rescue groups across the nation, there are an abundance of healthy senior pets looking for a special home to cherish them for the rest of their lives. Although shaping the life of a youngster sounds appealing, giving a second chance to an older companion can be equally rewarding. They like to share quiet moments, are already trained and usually do not chew or scratch everything in sight. "Older pets have plenty to offer adopters – not the least of which is love," comments Jacque Schultz, ASPCA Companion Animal Programs Advisor.

King Street Cats runs an Award-Winning campaign called
What About Me? ®
where we feature our harder to adopt kitties.
Many of those kitties are senior kitties
who lost their home later in life, through no fault of their own.

Miss Kitty is one of those special kitties that we would like to highlight.
Here is her story:

My name is Miss Kitty and I arrived here on 5-6-12 after my family gave me up because of allergies. I was born in February 2004. Although I'm an older kitty, I am in good health and really hoping that someone wants a kitty with a darling personality. I am a little uncertain around the other cats here so I have kept to myself. But I love people and have a beautiful outgoing personality with them. I am a loving girl who misses having a home. Will you adopt me?

Hannah Banana is one of those special kitties that we would like to highlight.
Here is her story:

My mane is Hannah and I'm a beautiful, sweet, "middle-aged" lady, who's part Manx with long black and brown hair. I am approximately 11 years old. I was born and raised in the beach resort town of Nags Head, North Carolina, known as the Outer Banks. My owner became ill and a friend took me in. My owner never got better and then my temporary home had to move. She tried to find me a safe shelter but was unable to. My owner's niece found out what shelter I was at and rushed there to save me before it was too late. I was then transferred here and I'm so happy. Even though I'm a mature cat, I still love to play, love to sit next to you on the couch to relax and watch TV, love for someone to pet/scratch my head and back while I purr and knead my paws, love to be near you and will follow you through the house, room-to-room all day, purring the entire time and most important... I love my canned food!!  I can be a little shy and nervous at first; who wouldn't after all I've been through?!? But in no time, I will trust and love you and want nothing more than your love in return. And maybe a quick petting and some can food!! I would love to find another loving family who will take me in and provide love and comfort for the years I have left to offer this world. Please come see me!

Adopt A Senior Pet-Meet Dancing Cat

Dancing Cat is one of those special kitties that we would like to highlight.
Here is his story:

My name is Dancing Cat and I originally arrived here on 1-30-11 after being found wandering around as a stray. I'm a handsome white and dark orange boy who was born January 2005. I somehow became lost from my home and ended up outside. This nice lady found me and was feeding me. She realized that I was friendly and brought me inside, but her other 3 cats were not happy about my arrival. I am not aggressive with animals at all and was fine with the other cats and even a Pug. So she brought me here to find a new home. I'm a wonderful boy and would love to find a home to call my own. I am very affectionate and like to sleep next to people (I even liked to wrap myself around the neck of the lady who saved me). I love to play and romp around and I earned my name because I will dance around when you come home! If you scratch my forehead, I will give you a big smile. I would do best in a home where I can be the only pet. I will give you lots of joy once you take me home. I was adopted on 8-13-11 to a home where I get to be the only pet (I really loved that) but then was returned on 4-15-12 because my owner had one of her previous cats returned to her and neither of us were happy about it. So while I'm not particularly pleased about losing yet another home and being surrounded by even more cats, I'm really going to put on my best smile and hope that someone will come and adopt me soon. I would thrive in a home that has no other pets or young children. I love calm environments. I'm such a love and will smile each time I see you. Please come see me!

Adopt A Senior Pet-Meet Lenore

Lenore is one of those special kitties that we would like to highlight.
Here is her story:

My name is Lenore and I'm a tiny black/white girl who arrived here on 4-7-11 after my family gave me up. I'm 11 years old (born January 2001) and I have lived my entire life with my family. They gave me up because there were 3 other cats in the home (older than me) and none of us got along. Plus there were issues with allergies getting worse. So for 2 months I was confused and really unhappy about my situation. I spent my time in a cage because I was so upset and sad about losing my home. But then I went into foster care in June 2011 and I'm a completely different cat! I love having a home and now my sweet personality is coming out. When my foster mom lays on the couch, I like to lay on top of her. I don't necessarily enjoy being petted, but I do love to be around people and sitting with them. I am hoping that someone will want an older kitty. I'm healthy and have a lot of great years left. I would do best in a home where there are no other pets and where I can be a companion to someone who needs a friend. Is that you? If you're interested in meeting me, please contact King Street Cats!

Adopt A Senior Pet-Meet PC!

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

PC is one of those special kitties that we would like to highlight.
Here is her story:

My name is PC (it stands for politically correct) and my family gave me up on 4-7-12. I'm 11 years old and had spent my entire life with them. They gave me up because they didn't like me scratching furniture. It's what cats do unless you get us scratching posts to use. I was named PC because for most of my life, my family didn't know whether I was a girl or a boy and wanted to be PC about it. For a couple of months, I was very upset over losing my home. The volunteers spend a lot of time with me to help me adjust and feel better. I'm not good around other cats so that is stressing me out. Although recently, I have ventured out of my cage (the door is always open for me to do that) and now I am completely out of the cage. After I arrived here it was discovered that I have a thyroid condition and needed medicine everyday. In June, I was given a radiation treatment on my thyroid and now I don't need medicine. I've really mellowed, accepted my circumstances and have started to show what a beautiful and loving heart I have. I have a lot of great years to give to someone.
Will you consider giving me, a senior kitty, a home?

Shop to Help the Kitties of King Street Cats

As much as we would like to deny it,
holiday decor is out in the stores
(and it has been since August in some stores...no, really!).
So, you know what that means...
Time to start thinking about all that shopping and traveling you need to do.

I am a big fan of online shopping.
Many times the shipping costs are low, or even free,
and to me, that beats driving all over the DC area
to procure the perfect gifts and goodies.

AdoptAShelter.com is one of my favorite sites to visit.
Did you know they have over 400 merchants
that will donate a percentage of your purchases
to the shelter of your choice?
They don't raise their prices to cover this donation...
it's the same price as if you went to these merchants' websites directly!
King Street Cats runs solely on donations.
We have proudly rescued more cats this year than any other,
but with that, we need more money for supplies and vet bills.

What merchants participate?
Well, their most popular ones include
Amazon, Ebay, Old Navy, Overstock, PetsMart,
Target, Walmart, and Zazzle.

But some of the other big names that will surely help you
purchase everything you need for gifts, parties, travel plans, etc. include:
1-800-Flowers, Best Buy, Dollar Car Rental, Hotels.com,
iTunes, Kohls, Lord & Taylor, Netflix, Office Depot,
REI, Vera Bradley, Wine.com
and 100's more!

So, if you have shopping to do, why not support
a good cause at the same time?

Barn Cats

By Romy Maimon, Examiner

Loving homes come in all forms, especially for cats that are saved from difficult situations and are not overly comfortable living so close to a human.
In these cases, a good home can come in the form of a barn or other similar set-up. A place where they will be well taken care of, but not forced to cuddle or act like a house-cat.
But, as with regular adoptions, these type of homes are often very hard to come by as one Virginia cat rescue has learned. King Street Cats is a no-kill cat rescue and is not usually able to assist the public with rescue of feral or semi-feral cats, but lent their support to a situation over the summer that resulted in several such type of cats in desperate need of relocation.
"We were very fortunate that one of our volunteers knows some folks with horse farms and we were able to talk with them about the possibility of re-homing a few of these cats there. They understood that they would need to keep them indoors for 3 weeks with food, water and litter boxes before letting them out. Thereafter, they would need to provide them with food and shelter and take care of them to the extent that the cats would allow. They were incredibly receptive to the idea of helping relocate city kitties to the countryside and employing spayed/neutered and vaccinated “green pest control” agents. We’ve been lucky enough to witness the transport of cats that, in one case had been shot on the streets and barely survived, to beautiful farms in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
However, we soon realized that there is always more need than there are barns available so we are continuing to put out the call. While not all semi/feral streets cats need relocating and they are being taken care of by dedicated people right where they are, sadly there are some cats living in danger on the streets and we need to get them to a safer environment, where they have food and shelter in a safe haven before winter sets in."
There is no doubt that this need is immense no matter where you are in this country, and there are people who may not know that they can help in this way. The more it is shared, the more lives saved.

King Street Cats in their Furrever Homes-Rexy

Love hearing about our kitties in their new homes,
so here's an update on Rexy, written by Rexy himself!

My name is Rexy. I waited a long time for my family to discover me at King Street Cats. Now that I have a home of my own, I'm learning how to relax and play.

I spent a lot of time living outside. A nice person fed me and looked out for me, but when he went to jail, I was alone. Arriving at King Street Cats felt like heaven! I had plenty of food and friends. I could sit at the window all day, watching the world outside. But when my family came to adopt me last month, I was ready to go to my forever home.

My mom came to visit me for a few weeks so I could get to know her. She always brought treats and a little towel that contained the scent of my new dad, and my new brother and sister.

When they brought me home and opened the travel cage in me very own room, I didn't know what to do! I hid under the furniture, but I let my parents scratch my chin.. I loved the attention. Eventually, I learned to crawl out from under the buffet every time they came to see me, so they could brush my fur and give me hugs and kisses.

It turned out that my new brother and sister were old friends! Patches and Jasmine spent a lot of time with me at King Street Cats before they were adopted by mom and dad. They sat outside the glass doors of my room, everyday, waiting for me to come out and play. Mom helped us get reacquainted by feeding us dinner and treats with doors open just the tiniest crack. Day by day, the crack between my bedroom doors got a little bit wider until the three of us became real dinner companions.

My parents built me a clubhouse of my very own and filled it with a warm blanket and soft cat toys they bought for me. I'm not always sure what to do with all the toys yet. I see Jasmine and Patches playing with them. A few days ago I tried playing with one of the toys. I chased it under the dining room table!

Patches and Jasmine have a special game they play. Patches will run up to Jasmine and give her a kiss on the nose. Then they chase each other around the house. Sometimes Patches runs up to me and gives me kisses on the nose. He looks at me like he wants me to chase after him, but I'm still a little uncertain. Next time, maybe I'll try to give him a kiss back! Then maybe we can all play together.

My favorite part of the day is the evening. When my dad comes home from work, he brushes my fur. Patches, Jasmine, and I like to snuggle on the bed with our mom while she reads herself to sleep. I have my own special spot, snuggled under her right shoulder. Mom wakes up at night to give me some head scratches and tell me she loves me.

I stay there until it's time to get up in the morning and help her make breakfast. I especially like to help her collect all the food and water bowls, and I'm very good at pointing out where she needs to pick up a stray piece of kibble!
